Who has to Smog?

When selling a vehicle, it is the Seller’s responsibility to have the vehicle smog checked on or before transfer of ownership even if a seller and buyer make a deal that the buyer is going to smog it, any smog problems identified on the vehicle is legally the seller’s responsibility.

A smog certificate is only good for 90 days – no more. If you fail to complete your DMV registration within 91 or more days, you will be required to smog it again.

1. Biannual (DMV renewal and Registration starts when a  vehicle is 6 or 7 years old. 

2. Change of ownership (unless it’s a blood-relative  transfer with the same last name, a vehicle must be smogged to change  ownership.  Note: This does not alter the present bi-annual smog schedule for      the vehicle, so if you buy a vehicle and six months later it comes due for a biannual test, it will have to be smogged again even though it was smogged six month prior to transfer) 

3 Initial Inspection (bringing a vehicle into  California requires an additional Smog inspection, again, this will not      alter the biannual smog schedule).
